i have a colorful history. my parents are english and moved to south africa as missionaries in 1979 with my two sisters. they found themselves submerged in a society crippled by apartheid and violence. i was born in south africa and i am proud of all it. they have shown a tenacity and creativity that carries them to higher places where tribe and colour are becoming less important. while it’s history is scarred each of us are forced to move toward and seek a brighter future. i have experienced the beauty and disgrace of south africa and am glad that it is a part of who i am.
i spent a decade exploring england where i met my best friend and life companion. we spent some time searching for a new home and travelled by land, air and sea to find a place where we belong. we now live in melbourne, australia with our dalmatian, and a proud herb garden.
i spend a lot of time looking at art, it is hard not to, as we are surrounded by it in galleries and books and the internet. however, the less traditional spaces where we encounter art are the ones that fascinate me the most. i love street art, children’s drawings and shop window displays. these forms of art incorporate a sense of play. they borrow from each other. it is so easy for me to find beauty in the unexpected spaces we occupy. my art is less obvious and layered with meaning. i tangle images, symbols and words. my art is made with my whole heart and it fulfills more than just a desire to create an art object. it fulfills a need within me to share myself with people.
following the completion of my fine art degree in 2006, i realised that my interest in the arts extended beyond my own studio practice. as an artist and curator I feel art is a valuable tool with which we can improve the quality of the lives of others through education and cultural development. i am currently pursuing post graduate study in art management in order to better resource my desire to create a platform for art in present-day society so that people can live richer and more fulfilled lives.
art grows when we spend just a little time trying to connect with it. i have lived in different countries and embraced new cultures. by doing this I am building my history. i love history. it counts for a lot, but not as much as the future. i am excited for tomorrow but I want today to count to something more meaningful than yesterday.
